Frequently asked questions

Answers about getting help, volunteering, blood donation and donating.

Getting help

Who can get help from Spreading Hope Society?

Anyone in need in Surrey and the Lower Mainland — individuals and families, regardless of background, religion or belief. That is the spirit of Sarbat da Bhala.

How do I ask for food, groceries or essential items?

Fill out our assistance request form or call Ruby Grewal at +1 (604) 832-1924. A volunteer will contact you to arrange support.

Is my request confidential?

Yes. Your information is only used to help you and is never shared without your permission, except where required by law. See our privacy policy.

Do you run a shelter?

We do not operate a shelter, but we connect people with shelters and housing support services. For shelter tonight, call 2-1-1 (bc211, 24/7). If you are in danger, call 911.

Volunteering

How do I become a volunteer?

Complete our volunteer registration form. Our volunteer coordinator will contact you about upcoming opportunities.

Do I need experience to volunteer?

No experience is needed — just a willing heart. We will guide you on the day. Some roles, such as food handling or driving, may need a FOODSAFE certificate or a valid driver's licence.

Can students and young people volunteer?

Yes! Volunteers under 18 are welcome with permission from a parent or guardian.

Blood & plasma donation

How do I join the Spreading Hope Society blood donation team?

Create an account at blood.ca or in the GiveBlood app, select “Partners”, search for “Spreading Hope Society” or our PFL ID SPRE0128108, and click “Join the team”. Or use our direct team link.

Who can donate blood?

Eligibility is decided by Canadian Blood Services. Check the eligibility quiz at blood.ca or call 1-888-2-DONATE before booking.

When is your next blood drive?

We hold annual drives in honour of Baba Deep Singh Ji, plus team appointments during the year. Follow us on Instagram for dates in Surrey and Abbotsford.

Donations

How can I donate?

You can send an Interac e-Transfer, donate food and essential items, give blood or volunteer your time. See all the ways on our Donate page.

What items do you accept?

Non-perishable food and groceries, hygiene kits and personal care items, warm clothing, socks and blankets, and daily necessities for families. Please contact us to arrange a drop-off.

Can I get a receipt for my donation?

Please mention it in your e-Transfer message or contact us, and we will help you with a receipt.
